Have you ever heard of Movember?  I hadn’t until my brother Jonathan reached out to me looking for help with adding a fake moustache to his photo.

Jonathan asked if I might be able to help out (beyond the photo).  He was leading the charge for Movember at the UW, getting urologists, oncologists, researchers and staff that care for patients with these types of cancer to join the MoDAWGS Urologic Oncology team.  Such a great concept – people from the UW Urology Department, the SCCA, and the FHCRC all growing moustaches.  Of course people will be talking about this!

I was motivated on multiple levels to get involved:

1)  I loved the idea — and was thrilled to help build their website and tools for social media outreach.

2)  As a stem cell donor for a clinical trial at the SCCA several years ago, I experienced first-hand what it is like to be a part of cancer research and how it touches people’s lives.  The work that these doctors and researchers are doing is ground-breaking.  Movember is a great vehicle for raising awareness about the cancers that men face, and for raising the vital funds that support ongoing research and patient care.

3)  In my own work, I have the flexibility to work on a broad range of projects – and especially enjoy initiatives like MoDAWGS – that are centered on promoting accessibility to information for a very good cause.  The world is full of tools and platforms that are accessible for anyone to use to create something new.  All it takes is a good idea, and the passion to help bring it to life.

And MoDAWGS certainly is a great one.
